Ysu3dp
YSU 3D Printing Workshops 2016-2017
Purpose
We will introduce students, faculty, and staff to 3D printing and rapid prototyping technologies through a series of hands-on workshops in 2016-17. These classes will familiarize the YSU community with current trends and possibilities in digital manufacturing, introduce the significant 3D printing resources and research on campus, and provide participants direct experience with printing tools. Finally, these workshops aim to raise the visibility of YSU 3D printing research, and contribute to a community of interest around the technology.

Workshops
INTRODUCTORY
Introduction to 3D Printing [1]
This workshop provides a brief introduction to 3d printing technology followed by hands on experience with solid modeling software and 3d printing hardware.
INTERMEDIATE
Capturing Real Objects: 3D Scanning and Photogrammetry for Digital Fabrication [2]
Introduction to tools for camera-based photogrammetry, structured light scanning, and Kinect depth sensors for digital modeling. Participants will capture point clouds, clean them up with mesh editing software, and print them.
Creative modeling for 3D printing
Use common 3D modeling software (Rhinoceros) to make models for printing. Find and collage existing models, generate models from scratch. Explore the relationships between 3D printing and 3D modeling in computer animation fields.
Materials for 3D Printing
Introduce the characteristics and relative merits of different 3D printing materials including ABS, PLA, Resins, and others. Using flexible filament, dissolving filament.
Multi-Modal Fabrication Techniques
Augmentation of 3D printing using other fabrication techniques: This includes subtractive manufacturing (laser-cutter, CNC routing) as well as traditional wood and metal shop techniques such as tapping, heat forming, post-print treatments.
Making Things That Move: 3D Printing for Mechatronics and Robotics
Designing parts to work with motors, mechanisms, and embedded electronics.
Software
You can install this software on your own machine:
Rhinoceros 3D
3-D modeling. (download) free for 90 days, full version is on lab machines
Slic3r
Model slicing and g-code generator for 3D printers. (download) free
Meshmixer
state-of-the-art software for working with triangle meshes (download osx, windows, linux) free
To use meshmixer, download, unzip, and copy the following files to your ~/Documents/meshmixer folder:
Sketchup
3D modeling (download) pro is free for 30 days, then you keep the basic version.
To use Sketchup make, you need to export sketchup files as dxf or stl using a plugin. This one works: http://www.guitar-list.com/download-software/convert-sketchup-skp-files-dxf-or-stl
Cura Lulzbot Edition
Model slicing and g-code generation (download osx) free
To use the Cura Lulzbot Edition for the CreatorBot Pro, download the machine settings file below, unzip, and copy to ~/Library/Application Support/Cura/21.00/:
- machine settings: creatorbot_cura_machine.settings.zip
- filament profiles: creatorbot_cura_filament_profiles.zip
