== Homework 1 ==

Part 1: Personal Information

I've had a fascination with art ever since my mom bought me my first pack of crayons. As technology advances, so do my interests; so long, crayola. I've experienced various forms of art expression throughout my adolescence, some being Chinese calligraphy, street art, and painting(with the Paint program on my desktop). Lately, I've been genuinely interested in digital photography and sketching abstract drawings of abstract paintings shown in lectures.

* Why am I an Media Arts (Computing Emphasis) major?
I enjoy the diverse art courses required by this major. I am also passionately interested in the potential of creating digital images through the computer as the medium.
* What made me decide to become an art student?
It seemed like the way to go when majoring in Structural Engineering didn't work out. Also, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_fantasy[Final Fantasy]], as a story told through gameplay and graphics, was a huge artistic influence on me as a young teen.
* Why this class?
It's required for my major. I'm indifferent about taking this course. Honestly, I see this as just another hurdle to obtaining my diploma. Hopefully, I'll gain something valuable from this class, I hate leaving a class empty-handed.
* Any experience with electronics?
I'm with few sound devices, video game consoles, and monitors. I'm not going to say I'm savvy with the ins and outs of every electronic I own, but I'm quick to figure out which light bulb a switch turns on(har har).

== Midterm Proposal ==

Idea: Anti-Drag Race Car.

Most electronic race-car drags are made with one switch that accelerates the vehicle to its maximum speed and continues its velocity. What I'm going to do is attach two NO switches to deframe it into a vehicle that relies on a switch in order to connect to the power source, as well as a switch that disconnects from it. The drag car will be then transformed to a bumper car-like vehicle that is handicapped and serves little speedy purposes.
Idea: Sunshine to the Rain

* When walking on the streets under a dark gloomy sky, rain is just about waiting to attack you while you slowly become more and more depressed by the gray atmosphere.
My final project will be a modified umbrella that consists of LED lights that illuminate from underneath the canopy, which creates a series of images that depict daytime (birds flying in the blue sky, ducks swimming in the pond at the park, the sun shining).

Using this code (http://luckylarry.co.uk/2009/06/3-led-crossfade-with-pwm-and-arduino/) as the start-up, I positioned my umbrella to have 3 different images on three sections of the canopy, each displaying either a Sun, a Park, or a Beach.

== Homework 1 ==

* Why this class?
It's required for my major. I'm indifferent about taking this course. Honestly, I see this as just another hurdle to obtaining my diploma. Hopefully, I'll gain something valuable from this class, I hate leaving a class empty-handed.
* Any experience with electronics?
I'm with few sound devices, video game consoles, and monitors. I'm not going to say I'm savvy with the ins and outs of every electronic I own, but I'm quick to figure out which light bulb a switch turns on(har har).

== Midterm Proposal ==

I've had a fascination with art ever since my mom bought me my first pack of crayons. As technology advances, so does my interests; so long, crayons. I've experienced plenty forms of art expression throughout my adolescence, such as Chinese calligraphy, street art, and painting(with the Paint program on my desktop). Lately, I've been genuinely interested in digital photography and sketching abstract drawings from abstract paintings shown in lectures.

* Why am I an Media Arts (Computing Emphasis) major?
I enjoy the diverse fields of art courses required by this major. I am also passionately interested in the potential of creating digital images through the computer as the medium.
* What made me decide to become an art student?
It seemed like the way to go when majoring in Structural Engineering didn't work out. Also, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_fantasy[Final Fantasy]] was a huge artistic influence on me as a young teen.
* Why this class?
It's required for my major. I'm indifferent about taking this course. Honestly, I see this as just another hurdle to obtaining my diploma. Hopefully, I'll gain something valuable from this class, I hate passing a class empty-handed.
* Any experience with electronics?
I'm with few sound devices, video game consoles, and monitors. I'm not going to say I'm savvy with the ins and outs of every electronic I own, but I'm quick to figure out which light bulb a switch turns on(har har).

* Why this class?
It's required for my major. I'm indifferent about taking this course. Honestly, I see this as just another hurdle to obtaining my diploma. Hopefully, I'll gain something valuable from this class, I hate passing a class empty-handed.
* Any experience with electronics?
I'm with few sound devices, video game consoles, and monitors. I'm not going to say I'm savvy with the ins and outs of every electronic I own, but I'm quick to figure out which light bulb a switch turns on(har har).

== Grading ==
Overall grade:
* Assignments 50%
* Midterm Project 20%
* Final Project 30%

Assignments are graded on completion. If I assign something during lecture or if you do not finish a lab activity, that item will be due by the next section (one week later). If you finish on time, you will get 100% credit.

Attendance is mandatory. Each absence (from lecture or section) is a 1/2 letter grade deduction off your final grade. Three absences is a failing grade.

Projects are graded on :
* 33.3% - concept/proposal
* 33.3% - effort
* 33.3% - realization/documentation

Readings will familiarize you with material covered in lecture.

== Books ==
They should both be at the bookstore, though other sources may be cheaper.
== Curriculum ==

=== Week 1 - Intro ===
* Lecture:
** Grading/rules
** Goals
** Art
* Homework 1:
** part 1 - Create a page for yourself on the wiki, adding it to this list [Classes/2010/VIS147A#Student_Pages]. On your personal page, put your name and one paragraph describing your interests in art generally and your interests in electronics and art specifically. Questions to get started: Why are you an art/ICAM major? Are you an art major? Why are you taking this class in particular? Do you have any previous experience with electronics?
** part 2 - Field Research. If it plugs in, has buttons, has a switch, toasts bread, emits light, it probably runs on electricity. We are surrounded by electronic devices. This presents an opportunity. Conceivably, with the right hardware, you can interface with or control any electronic device. Exploring your local environment (your neighborhood, walmart) make a list of electrical devices, and document the 5 most interesting in this regard--things you would like to control. Avoid the dorm room problem--i.e. do not photograph things in your dorm room, apartment, at the price center, etc., unless you have good reason to do so. Dorm room art looks like dorm room's and thus enters the world severely handicapped. Don't do it!!! Document means photograph, video, or draw. Post images of these five things to the wiki page you made in part 1. If you are feeling extra creative, briefly describe how you would use each item.
* Lab 1:

=== Main Board ===
Many different options. All share a common programming environment, common code, and a similar physical layout. The board we are using does not require an external USB adaptor, which means all we need to do to program (and power) it is to plug it into the computer with a USB cable.

== Homework 1 ==

Part 1:
Some background...

* Why this class?
It's required for my major. I'm indifferent about taking this course. Honestly, I see this as just another hurdle to obtaining my diploma. Hopefully, I'll gain something valuable from this class, I hate passing a class empty-handed.
* Any experience with electronics?
I'm with few sound devices, video game consoles, and monitors. I'm not going to say I'm savvy with the ins and outs of every electronic I own, but I'm quick to figure out which light bulb a switch turns on(har har).

=== Week 1 - Intro ===
* Lecture:
** Grading/rules
** Goals
** Art
* Homework 1:
=== Main Board ===
Many different options. All share a common programming environment, common code, and a similar physical layout. The board we are using does not require an external USB adaptor, which means all we need to do to program (and power) it is to plug it into the computer with a USB cable.

=== Week 1 - Intro ===
* Lecture:
** Grading/rules
** Goals
** Art
* Homework 1:
Many different options. All share a common programming environment, common code, and a similar physical layout. The board we are using does not require an external USB adaptor, which means all we need to do to program (and power) it is to plug it into the computer with a USB cable.

Part 1:
Some background...

* Why this class?
It's required for my major. I'm indifferent about taking this course. Honestly, I see this as just another hurdle to obtaining my diploma. Hopefully, I'll gain something valuable from this class, I hate passing a class empty-handed.
* Any experience with electronics?
I'm with few sound devices, video game consoles, and monitors. I'm not going to say I'm savvy with the ins and outs of every electronic I own, but I'm quick to figure out which light bulb a switch turns on(har har).

== Homework 1 ==

Part 1:

Also, [[Final Fantasy]] was a huge artistic influence on me as a young teen.
* Why this class?
It's required for my major. I'm indifferent about taking this course. Honestly, I see this as just another hurdle to obtaining my diploma. Hopefully, I'll gain something valuable from this class, I hate passing a class empty-handed.
* Any experience with electronics?
I'm with few sound devices, video game consoles, and monitors. I'm not going to say I'm savvy with the ins and outs of every electronic I own, but I'm quick to figure out which light bulb a switch turns on(har har).
